چکیده

Early detection o f residualpopulations o f domestic triatomine bugs that survive insecticide treatment is a key component o f successful evaluation and vigilance fo r Chagas disease control. We have recently demonstrated that sheets o f paper, tacked on to the walls o f infested houses, can become streaked with the faeces o f triatomine bugs and thus reveal thepresence o f an infestation. In thispaper, wepresent a simple key to differentiate the faecal streaks o f triatomine bugs from those o f other domestic arthropods such as cockroaches, ticks and cimicid bedbugs.

Detecting domestic vectors of Chagas disease: a comparative trial of six methods in north-west Argentina.

Six methods for detecting domestic infestations by triatomine bugs were compared in the rural community of Amamá, north-west Argentina. An average of three pairs (range, 2-5 pairs) of sensor boxes and sheets of pink typing-paper were tacked to the walls of human sleeping areas in 45 houses for 30 days and then inspected by a two-man team. Triatoma infestans bugs were collected in bedrooms by a ...

Monitoring house reinfestation by vectors of Chagas disease: a comparative trial of detection methods during a four-year follow-up.

Domestic reinfestations by triatomine bugs were monitored after application of deltamethrin and apparent elimination of Triatoma infestans in Amama and other nearby rural villages, north-west Argentina, from 1992 to 1996. The five methods used were sensor boxes, sheets of pink typing-paper, timed manual catches by a skilled three-person team aided by a flushing-out agent, collections by house-d...

Factors controlling the volume of feces produced by triatomine vectors of Chagas' disease.

Triatomine species influenced volume of feces produced; Triatoma dimidiata produced the largest volume of feces followed by Panstrongylus megistus, Rhodnius prolixus, and Triatoma infestans. Moreover, stage and sex affected fecal production; 5th-stage female nymphs excreted the largest volume of feces. The amount of blood ingested was significantly correlated with the volume of feces produced i...

The ecotopes and evolution of triatomine bugs (triatominae) and their associated trypanosomes.

Triatomine bug species such as Microtriatoma trinidadensis, Eratyrus mucronatus, Belminus herreri, Panstrongylus lignarius, and Triatoma tibiamaculata are exquisitely adapted to specialist niches. This suggests a long evolutionary history, as well as the recent dramatic spread a few eclectic, domiciliated triatomine species. Virtually all species of the genus Rhodnius are primarily associated w...

Intrusive versus domiciliated triatomines and the challenge of adapting vector control practices against Chagas disease

Chagas disease prevention remains mostly based on triatomine vector control to reduce or eliminate house infestation with these bugs. The level of adaptation of triatomines to human housing is a key part of vector competence and needs to be precisely evaluated to allow for the design of effective vector control strategies. In this review, we examine how the domiciliation/intrusion level of diff...
